1971 Firebird
1971 Pontiac Firebird Description
Too many projects and I need to let this one go.
This car started as a base model 1971 Pontiac Firebird. I picked it up 4 1/2 years ago with the idea of returning it to the stock look and creating a high-performance "sleeper."
The prior owner replaced the original engine with a rebuilt Pontiac 400 with headers. Somewhere along the line the car was repainted from its original bronze and received the formula hood.
Since acquiring it, I converted it to a manual transmission (Muncie M20 wide ratio transmission, Centerforce Clutch and Hurst Competition Plus shifter), replaced the brakes all around, installed a Pro Touring F-Body Super Duty Suspension Package, rebuilt the rear end with 3.23 gears and a TrueTrac locking differential, changed the upper and lower A-arms, replaced the steering linkages and have done a number of other odds and ends. The car handles well, sounds great, and is fun to drive.
What the car primarily needs now is bodywork and a new interior. There is some rust (see photos) but as far as I know, this has always been a West Coast car. The rust is primarily at the lower ends of the front fenders and the at the lower end of the passenger side quarter panel The car comes with two additional '71 fenders (right and left -- see photos) that are in better shape than the two on there now. I have kept the car garaged the entire time I have had it. The windshield has a small crack at the lower left corner and should be replaced eventually.
The fiberglass rear tail panel has been removed for repair (see photo) and is available as are the inner wheel wells.
There are a number of small parts that I have been collecting and that are part of the deal.
Since the time of the first pictures, I put on some smaller tires with 15X8 Ralley II wheels. I also took of the Micky Thompson aluminum valve covers and went back to the stock, blue colored Pontiac covers (see later pics). The Mag wheels/tires you see in the early pics are available and part of the deal as are the MT valve covers. If you want it, most of the stuff I pulled out is still here.
Be happy to answer questions you may have.
