1983 Toyota Other Description
UP FOR AUCTION:
1983 TOYOTA 4WD SHORT BED PICKUP W/ 2.4L 22RBackground:
I have decided that it is time to part with my beloved 1983 Toyota 4WD Short Bed Pickup. With a growing family, I simply don't have the opportunity to drive it much anymore and I'm a believer that even older vehicles deserve to be driven rather regularly in order to truly appreciate them. I also have the itch to restore another truck - a more family oriented truck.
I originally purchased this truck in January 2012 on a whim. I decided to take the long way home from hunting and saw the truck on the side of the road. I went home, convinced my 7 month pregnant wife to let me buy it and returned with cash. Since I was a little kid, I had always wanted a first generation 4WD Toyota Pickup. When people ask me "why that truck?" I always respond with "some people dream of owning Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, etc... This was my dream vehicle." The truck was pretty rough when I got it. The suspension was horrible, the tires were way too big for the engine/gearing, the engine burnt a ton of oil (2 quarts between fill-ups), the fuel economy was terrible (around 6 MPG), the body was dinged up pretty good, it had an ugly step side bed, the floor pan was rusted out and the previous owner was an absolute idiot so there were some shoddy repairs and modifications throughout the truck. I got it running good enough so I drove it around for the Summer before I decided to tear it down and start the restoration in the Fall of 2012. I use the term "restoration" loosely as this is really more of a restomod. I built this truck to look similar to original while upgrading certain aspects to make it look and/or perform better than original condition. Working on cars and motorcycles has been in my blood forever so everything from start to finish was completed by myself so I know absolutely everything about this truck and the build. Literally the only thing I did not do myself was the machine work on the engine and install the windshield (it was free...). If you have questions about this truck, I can answer them myself - no going back and forth to the builders or mechanics here.
These first generation Toyota pickups are an EXTREME rarity here on the East Coast and if you do spot one around here they are typically rusted and rotted away so this truck definitely turns heads every time I drive it. I get people taking pictures and/or asking about it constantly. It is truly a fun truck and I am very proud of it, but I think it is time to let it go for somebody else to enjoy it. Like I said, I know every aspect of this truck inside and out. The person who invests in this truck will likely be just as much of a Toyota enthusiast as I am so I will be available during and after the sale if you have any questions. I also have over 1,000 photos of the entire restoration process as well as a few videos of the truck running. Unfortunately eBay only allows me 24 photos; I have uploaded some of the build photos on PhotoBucket at the link below; however, if you would like to see more photos and/or videos please contact me. You may also contact me if you would like to stop by to see or test drive the truck.

I'm certain that I forgot some stuff above, but that should be most of it.
Negatives:
- Exhaust sounds great - very throaty at idle (especially for a 4 banger), but does generate a fair amount of cab noise on the highway. A more mild muffler may be installed if you want a quieter ride
- This is an older solid axle truck with push-pull steering so there is a little bit of the typical bump and brake steer. It is not extreme, but I wanted to disclose that it does exist.
- I have regularly driven this truck over the past year since I completed the restoration so there are a few paint chips from stones and normal use. Not many and you probably wouldn't notice them unless I pointed them out, but again, I wanted to disclose that they do exist.
- It is a small truck. I'm 6'1" and I do fit in it, but it ain't a spacious Caddy.
- This truck HAS ZERO EMISSIONS COMPONENTS. If your state has emissions requirements then you will have issues tagging this truck. Here in Maryland, anything over 20 years old does not have to pass through emissions.
Positives:
- This truck is just over a year out of restoration. I first sparked the engine on March 28, 2015 and have put less than 3,000 miles on it since. It's like owning a brand new 33 year old truck!
- NO RUST!! I have completely remedied all of the rust issues and applied the proper coatings to prevent future rust issues. Plus the bed is made of fiberglass so it will NEVER rust.
- With the exception of the transmission and transfer case, every single nut, bolt and part has been remove and meticulously clean or replaced. Anything parts that were metal and could fit in a standard oven were powdercoated to achieve maximum durability, protection and appearance.
- The suspension rides great! Just slightly more stiff than stock, but there is not a better riding aftermarket suspension out there than Old Man Emu.
- This truck has been 100% garage kept since the restoration. It has only see rain once and that was when I got caught out in the rain coming home from a car show last summer. It has clearly been babied since I completed the restoration and the most "off roading" I have done in it was taking it in a field to bait deer and through a wooded trail for a photo op.
- The engine runs VERY strong! I'm not certain of the actual HP, but I would pin it somewhere in the 125+ HP neighborhood (stock is 97 HP). Acceleration and highway speeds are no problem - I have had it up to 80 MPH on the freeway. Fuel economy sits in the neighborhood of 18-22 MPG. It can sit for two weeks and still fire right up with no choke - even during the winter.
- All systems (Electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, steering, suspension, drivetrain, braking) function properly and safely.
- I have ALL of the receipts from the restoration as well as the Toyota Factory Service Manual that I will include with the sale of the truck.
- The truck shows well. It always draws a crowd at cars shows - even among all of the domestics. A couple weeks ago, I won best truck as the only import among over 30 domestic pickups.
- The whole build process has been documented at the link below. Read through the build and you will see EXACTLY what you are bidding on .
