Extendible loading panel - a pullout shelf that permits loading/unloading of heavy objects without having to balance them on the rear bumper
Self-leveling, pneumatic rear spring/strut suspension ensures an absolutely flat cargo floor
Tailgate power pulldown motor
BMW's Steptronic transmission functions as a conventional automatic with standard or Sport shift programming, it is switched to semi-manual operation via the gear selector. Once in this "M" mode, changing gears is as simple as flicking the lever forward for upshifts or backward for downshifts. It's intuitive with a digital dash readout confirms current gear selection.
The wagon is only about 100 pounds heavier than a comparably equipped four-door, ensuring that there's no noticeable decrease in performance, braking capability, or handling prowess. From the driver's seat, you'd never know you were in a wagon. BMW's 4.4-liter/282 horsepower DOHC all-alloy V-8 delivers plenty of torque down low, and autobahn-swallowing horsepower right up to redline allowing you to cruise all day at 140 mph (where legal of course).
U.S.-bound 540i touring wagons have a numerically lower differential ratio (3.15:1 versus 2.81:1), for even punchier acceleration giving up a bit of top speed to gain even more impressive off-the-line snap.
When new this 540i touring cost $51,90
