Background
The BMW E39 generation 5 Series was arguably the best 5 Series ever. The E39 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk's awkwardly styled E60 5 Series. The post-facelift 530i Sport is probably the best daily driver BMW ever built. It has plenty of power, exceptional handling, sporting luxury, and the "last of the classics" E39 styling, yet with less maintenance than V8 powered E39s. The 3-liter M54B30 inline 6-cylinder engine mated to a manual gearbox is a rock-solid reliable combination. For the 2002 530i, the Sport Package included: M Sport Steering Wheel, M Sport Suspension, Sport Seats, Shadowline Trim, and 17 x 8 inch Style 42 wheels. E39s were so good that many literally had the wheels driven off of them, making clean, low mileage examples extremely rare.
Summary
While clean, low mileage examples are rare; this 2002 530i Sport is probably the lowest mileage, most pristine example in the country. It was special ordered to enthusiast spec with a slicktop (no sunroof), 5-speed manual, the sport package--and nothing else. That means less weight and fewer things to break. I am selling it on consignment for a fellow BMW CCA member and enthusiast who is a master technician for a local BMW performance shop. He has always been an excellent steward of the car, caring for and maintaining it to exceptionally high standards. It literally looks and drives exactly like it did when it left the show room 15 years ago. The original owner purchased it with the intention of preserving it. He drove it through the break in period, and then put it in long-term storage. The second owner purchased it five years later and drove it regularly, but sparingly and only on fair weather days. It is 100% stock and unmolested and in amazing condition, ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
Exterior
I am highly critical of our cars and I couldn't find much on this example that wasn't perfect. It presents exactly like a well-stored, fair weather driven, ultra-low mileage E39 should. There are a few superficial nicks and scratches commiserate with light use, but nothing glaring. The Titanium Silver Metallic paint (often called TiAg referencing the periodic table) is in excellent condition and one of the E39's best colors. The paint condition is excellent, with no significant chips, nicks, peeling clear coat or other glaring defects. The front bumper cover and hood leading edge have none of the rock chips that most Colorado cars have. All VIN tags are in place, the Carfax is clean, and it has never been in accident. All trim is present and in good condition. The headlights, fog lights, marker lights, and taillight lenses are all crystal clear and all lights operate correctly. The E39 was the first BMW with Angel Eyes; the ones on this car have no inoperative filaments. The windshield has no cracks or pitting. The side and rear windows are perfectly clear. The Style 42 sport wheels are in excellent shape, with no bends, paint chips, or curb rash. They are wrapped in fresh Pirelli P6 all season rubber with 90% tread remaining.
Interior
The Grey Standard leather is in amazing condition. It is as soft and supple as the day it left the dealership, having none of the normal hardening or fade that all BMW leather gets from use and UV exposure. Other than the overall appearance, the condition of the interior leather is the most striking element of the car. The grey high polished trim matches the leather perfectly and, to my eye, suits a sport package car much better than the wood options offered in the E39. Turn the key, and the M Sport steering wheel lowers into place. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. BMW all weather and carpeted floor mats have protected the carpet. The seat leather is immaculate: it has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat functions work, we replaced a sticky cable in the passenger seat bottom, likely due to lack of use. The instrument cluster, stereo, and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. There are no warning lights and no system check messages. The BMW Business stereo sounds fantastic. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The trunk carpet has no wear or stains. The factory placard showing the proper placement of 3 golf bags is present, as are the tool kit, factory jack, and spare tire. All owners manuals are present.
Mechanical
When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner's stewardship. This is especially true with an E39 5 Series. That said, the E39 was probably the last solidly reliable 5 Series, and the 530i was much more reliable than the V8 powered E39s. The maintenance records for this 530i go back to 2007, when it only had 1,259 miles. That invoice shows an inspection from removal from storage, an oil change and a fresh battery. Another oil change and brake fluid flush was done in 2009 at 3,225 miles, and another from that owner in 2013 at 10,942. The current owner did annual oil changes every year since. He also did a battery in 2014. Last Spring he did a 15,000 mile service including: oil change, engine air filter, cabin air filter, brake fluid flush, and overall inspection. From behind the wheel this 530i drives and feels exactly like a 16,000 mile car. No common E39 530i issues are present. The M54 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls to redline. It doesn't spot or leak. The clutch and shifter are smooth and precise. The suspension is compliant and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. Like any E39, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but thanks to its ultra low mileage, that shouldn't be for some time.
This 530i is truly an outlier example not only due to its mileage, but also its option list. We need an outlier price tag for it, but when you look at what you get for the money--a time capsule example of arguably one of the best BMW road cars ever built--it's good value. We would like to find a new owner for it who will enjoy, care for it and appreciate it as it has been.
