2000 Honda Insight Description

This car is a 5-speed manual, silver, 2-seater with spacious hatchback. 315,600 miles. No accidents. I'm the 3rd owner. The 2nd owner's replacement hybrid (IMA) battery gave me MPG in the low 50s in the winter and low 60s in the summer. When the battery failed, 4 years ago, I was delighted that my mechanic found an economical way to keep my Insight going: Since then, I've driven with the IMA battery disconnected, on gas alone. The car lacks the pep it used to have from the hybrid boost, but it's been very dependable. The stream-lined light-weight aluminum car still gets MPG in the 40s winter, 50s summer.
To pass inspection, the car needs work on an axle bushing, an exhaust leak, and the timing (VTEC) and intake air (IAT) control systems. It sometimes pops out of 3rd or 5th gear, and the tires are spent. Parking brake handle and gas tank opener are quirky but serviceable. Original driver's side carpet has a small split next to the clutch, but the visible parts of the carpet are in fairly good shape because it was covered with another carpet. One of the interior door handles and both exterior window trims have peeling or cracked coatings. Front bumper has a very small pushed-in area, and above it a small puncture wound. Oil pan has a temporary plug.
Fuel line and exhaust replaced fall 2014, brake line in 2015. To the best of my knowledge, the airbags, the brakes, front and rear wipers, defrost, locks and handles, heater, radio & CD player, and everything else works well. Appearance is still quite good for its age.
This is a classic and hard-to-find car with a devoted following. The first generation classic model gets much better miles-per-gallon than the newer Insights. It looks sleek, feels roomy, and its aluminum body can't rust. If you spend a lot of time on the highway and you care about the future of the human race, you should know that a First Generation Insight even surpasses the new Prius in lifetime mpg because the Prius only gets its best mileage during city driving. If you think I'm sentimental about this car, look at this: http://www.insightman.com!

You have several options if you buy this car: For the best experience, you can make the necessary repairs, install a new hybrid battery, and see why this car is so beloved. Or you can do minimal work and use it as I did for the last 4 years -- as a very fuel-efficient gas car. Or you can turn a profit by reselling its precious parts to grateful 1st Gen owners.
